Family mourns Punjab youth killed by ISISPHAGWARA: It was a deep shock for the family of Phagwara village Bohani youth Sukhwinder Singh (37) as they were hoping he would return back safe from Iraq as his name was not found in the first list. When they were informed about the death of Sukhwinder, their hope of his safe return was shattered.
A pall of gloom descended on Bohani village in Phagwara Sub Division, the native place of deceased Sukhwinder. The DNA matching confirmed that he was one of the youths from Punjab who had been missing in Iraq. Sub Divisional Magistrate Phagwara Jyoti Bala officially confirmed and passed on the information to the bereaved family.
Sukhwinder who had gone to Iraq in 2010, had been missing since 2014.
He was one of the 39 Indians who had been kidnapped and kept in captivity by the ISIS. The family had no clue about the whereabouts of Sukhwinder after his sudden disappearance in Iraq.
Additional Deputy Commissioner Phagwara Babita Kaler, Naib Tehsildar Swapandeep Kaur and Superintendent of the Police Phagwara Parminder Singh Bhandhal visited the family and met his father Nirmal Singh, mother Harbhghan Kaur, married sister Jaswinder Kaur and younger brother Gurpreet Singh to condole them.
Naib Tehsildar Swapandeep Kaur told this correspondent that blood and hair samples of some close relatives, including parents and brother had been collected by the district administration on October 31 last year for the DNA matching purpose.
Sukhwinder’s father works as a mason and the family has hand to mouth existence. Nirmal Singh said they last had a conversation with Sukhwinder in 2013 end only.
