HARRISBURG: Both Pennsylvania State Senate and House of Representatives in Harrisburg commenced their respective sessions on June 19 with Hindu prayers, containing verses from world’s oldest existing scripture.

Rajan Zed, President of Universal Society of Hinduism, delivered the invocations from ancient Sanskrit scriptures before the Senate and House and sprinkled few drops of sacred water from river Ganga on the occasion. Rajan then read the English interpretation of the prayers. Sanskrit is considered a sacred language in Hinduism and root language of Indo-European languages.

Reciting from Rig-Veda, the oldest scripture of the world still in common use; besides lines from Upanishads and Bhagavad-Gita (Song of the Lord), both ancient scriptures, he ended the prayer with “Om”, the mystical syllable containing the universe, which in Hinduism is used to introduce and conclude religious work.

House Speaker Mike Turzai observed that it was an honor to have Universal Society of Hinduism President deliver the opening prayer ahead of the #PaHouse session. Representative Mary Jo Daey wrote on her Twitter account that “Speaker Rep Turzai and I thank you for your inspirational words.”
