CHICAGO: KK Pamma and Thakar S Basati are hosting a family evening with Sufi Balbir on Saturday, December 28 at 6 pm at Holiday Inn 200 in Mt. Prospect, a northwest Chicago suburb.
The evening will consist of Sufi writings, songs composed by him. “For almost two decades, Punjabi singing has gone towards pop, focusing more on youth who are not really into Punjabi culture. People complained about it and few singers listened,” Basati said.
Gurdas Maan, Satinder Sartaaj and now Kanwar Grewal and Sufi Balbir are enjoying sold out shows. Sufi is already in US. His CD “Vanzara” is very well liked. Songs like, “Kehnda e Vanzara, Sauda Sasta Ae, Na kar yaara Gallan.” His new song “Chaardiwari” reminds all NRIs of their connection back home and is ready to be released.
He has been to many countries like Canada, US, most of Europe and Some Arab countries. A family man himself, Sufi strongly believes in promoting values of Punjabi culture. Yes he does sing fast dancing songs but even they have a meaning. Basati said, “I have heard people perform many times Ghum Charkhrha Sayian Da by Shah Husaain. The way Sufi performed at Chandigarh Kala Gram, everybody was moving with it.”
“Sufi” is a clear, pure essence that has filtered and settled slowly, deep within. It goes beyond the state of mounam (silence), even beyond the station of the mouna guru (the silent guru within us). It is that state of stillness when the resplendence of the pure clarity of wisdom has sunk down and settled completely within its ultimate completeness and perfection. “Sufi” reveals the nature of the final state of that Perfection, when it has settled down slowly to its ultimate Stillness.”
