WASHINGTON, DC: On January 28, Nirupama Rao, Ambassador of India to the United States, inaugurated an Apparel Trade show organized by the Apparel Export Promotion Council of India (AEPC), in cooperation with M/S Trade Good. Mr. Prabhu Dayal, Consul General of India in New York; Mr. A. Sakthivel, Chairman of the AEPC and Mr. Kevin Burke, President of American Apparel and Footwear Association were also present.
In her remarks, Ambassador Rao said that Indian textiles represent an unbroken link between India’s ancient culture and its modern day life style. She noted that India’s Apparel sector has rapidly upgraded its technology and is highly competitive in meeting US market demands in various segments including high fashion and mass consumption.
She highlighted that through DISHA (Driving Industry towards Sustainable Human Advancement), the Indian Apparel industry has implemented an industry-wide measure for facilitating and preparing Indian apparel manufacturers toward becoming more socially and environmentally responsible. She pointed out that at US$3.3 billion; India’s export of garments represents one of the important constituents of overall India-U.S trade.
At the trade meet, 35 member exporters exhibited their Fall/Winter 2013-14 collections. More than 300-400 buyers, including at least twenty brand stores participated in the B-2-B event.
This Buyer Seller Meet is expected to generate substantial spot business and also help cement long term business partnerships for participating exhibitors.
