CHICAGO: Ameya Pawar, the first ever Indian American to get elected as Chicago Councilor, has decided to jump into the Illinois Governor race with huge backing from Indian, Pakistani and other enlightened communities.
At a meeting with South Asian media to discuss campaign for Governor at Mysore Woodlands restaurant on Devon Ave, Ameya Pawar, 47th Ward Alderman and Democratic candidate for Illinois Governor, exuded confidence of winning the Governor race relying more on his constructive agenda , his sincerity and honesty of purpose.
He claimed in the meeting that he has enlisted a huger number of volunteers for the campaign, will be reaching out to electorates far and wide in the State and would be in a position to raise funds to meet the election expenses.
Discussing about his progressive platform, he said that ´”we cannot sit by and let politicians divide us, pitting one community against the next. While Bruce Rauner remains silent in the face of Donald Trump’s Muslim ban, I will continue to stand up for the rights of immigrants and remind people of the ways immigrants of all backgrounds contribute to our state and country.”
For about an hour and a half, Pawar answered questions from the media on a range of issues, including his positions on immigration, visas and sanctuary cities.
When asked about his position on supporting refugees, Pawar said “People fleeing war zones and oppression need our help. Refugees cross deserts and oceans in support of freedom, and Illinois should stand ready to give them the opportunity to pursue a brighter future.”
With the state of Illinois operating without a budget for more than 21 months and the looming deficits and pension obligations, Pawar observed that Illinois has a $700 billion economy, the 5th largest in the country. “So, the idea that our State doesn’t have the means to balance a budget and pay our bills is false.
The problem is our current tax structure unfairly burdens the middle class. We need to reform our tax structure by imposing a progressive income tax like our neighboring States in order to ensure the wealthy pay their fair share.”
With the change in the income tax structure, Illinois could raise billions of dollars more in revenue and meet most of its obligations, he asserted.
