FREMONT, CA: The Bay Area Tamil Manram has issued an appeal for funds to be sent for flood relief in Chennai and adjoining areas which have also been affected by the deluge.
Tamil Manram has been able to raise about 70,000 USD. In the appeal it says their target is to raise 150,000 USD to save and feed the people in affected areas of Cuddalore, Pondicherry, Chennai and surroundings.
“This target is only possible if everyone, Tamils, Non-Tamils, American, Indian, everyone gets the opportunity to donate. Please share this news with people from all community. This is a huge humanitarian effort,” says Abu Khan, Convener, Bay Area Tamil Manram.
The relief effort is being organized at a large level with many non-profit / social service organizations coming forward to provide help needed. At a meeting held recently, regardless of the language and region, people joined in large numbers.
“The initial fund $7500 is being sent to save people in 5 colonies (slums) in Chennai. This will feed and rescue 1500 families there. We are keeping accounting of funds received, sent and how it is being sent. Soon, we will publish the details to everyone,” the appeal says.
“Dine for Chennai” is another effort to raise funds for the relief, supported by restaurants in USA. More pledge is on the way. Restaurants in Bay Area and out of California State are also pledging to donate a percentage of their one day sale to this Flood Relief Effort.
Aachi Aappakadai (Sunnyvale), Malaikkottai (Fremont), Chennai Kings (Mountain View) have pledged 100% of their one day sale. Details about dates these restaurants hold Dine-For-Chennai drive will be communicated soon.
In addition to this, Bay Area Tamil Manram has decided to pledge $5000 for this relief effort.
Tamil Manram is 501-c(3) Tax Exempt non-profit organization.
