PHAGWARA: S. Charanjit Singh Bassi Memorial Charitable Trust, an NGO wedded to educational, sports and social welfare activities, September 28 distributed scholarships worth Rs 2.5 lakh to 125 meritorious students of schools and colleges.
The trust was floated by Dubai-based multi-millionaire entrepreneur and philanthropist Kulwinder Singh Bassi, son of S. Charanjit Singh Bassi.

K.K. Sardana, managing director, Sukhjit Starch and Chemicals Limited, Phagwara, and a leading NGO activist, presided over the function held in this connection.
The trust’s honorary secretary Jaswant Singh Gandam, cashier Amarjit Singh, Phagwara Blood Donors Council president Malkiat Singh Ragbotra, and council members TD Chawla and Gurmit Palahi were also present.

The trust also funds a football tournament, besides espousing other charitable activities.
S. Charanjit Singh Bassi, in whose memory the trust was floated, was an ex-serviceman and a social activist.
Popularly called ‘Chachaji’, Bassi had passed away July 10, 2013, and ever since the trust has been giving scholarships to brilliant students every year.
