Bay area kid shining in Indian reality show

SAN JOSE, CA: Mission San Jose student Pragathi Guruprasad is a well known name among Bay area music lovers. This 14 year old, 9th grader is now well known among Tamilians all over the world through her entry into the most popular music reality show “Super Singer Junior” which is on air in Indian channel Vijay TV.
Pragathi was auditioned for this show last year in June and was very excited when the show producers called her and informed her about selection.
She spoke to her parents and convinced them that she wanted to pursue her dream in music field and this is the best opportunity to do so.
This comes at a very high cost of missing school for a year if she progresses each round. With lot of hard work and dedication, she is now into the finals of the major reality event “Airtel Super singer Junior 3”.She will be competing with four other finalist and the event is on October 26. 2012.

She recorded her first film song, title track for the movie “Panithuli” in Chennai, India. She was awarded the prize for her voice and 2nd runner up for the Junior category in the Jaya TV “Carnatic music Idol USA” held at different centers all over the USA.
She was also a winner in the “Jai Ho Idol” competitions (Hindi film songs) held in the Bay area and was selected to perform the opening act for the Sukvinder Singh event last year. Her accolades include winning Hindustani music competition titles, Carnatic music competitions at Cleveland Aradhana festivals and as an 8 year old, Spandana Junior title conducted by Telugu association.
Language is no barrier for her, as she sang a “Punjabi number” to win one of the radio show competitions. For last two years she is a regular “mini concert” performer in Chennai, India during the December Carnatic music festival season, a high profile prestigious event well known all over the world.
Couple of years ago when she was challenged by her American friends that she sings only Indian classical music she trained herself to sing Western Classical and started a channel on Youtube to release cover for few of the Adele numbers. She won a few Western music competitions in school competing with American kids as well.
When asked what her favorite genre of music is, her response is very simple. She says, “I like to sing all types of music with no specific preference at this time. Wherever I get opportunity to sing I just sing. I sing film music when I want to have fun; Carnatic music when I want to meditate; Hindustani when I want to relax; Western music when I am in a party mood; Play the Veena when I want to be challenged since I am still not good at it”.
She says, “I speak both Tamil and Kannada fluently as my parents speak both. I learnt Sanskrit for couple years so that I could pronounce Hindi and Carnatic lyrics well.
