CHICAGO: ‘The RSS – A View To The Inside,’ a new book by Walter Andersen and Shridhar Damle, has received the Tata Literature Live award as the best book in non-fiction category.
This is a great honor for the authors and for the cause since this is probably the most prestigious award in the literary field in India. Walter Andersen has a continuing obligation at the university here in Shanghai. He will not be able to attend the actual award ceremony, he has informed his associates but his wife, Mrinalini, will be there to accept it on his behalf.
The book seeks to highlight the fact that the RSS is not static and that it addresses the major policy issues facing Indians and the Indian state. For this, the authors have worked over three years and interviewed over 500 people – and rewritten their text a dozen times if not more!
As Ram Madhav noted at the August 7 book launch, it differs from others in that the authors actually met RSS people to get, as the book title notes, a view to the inside – and by logical extension present a more accurate portrayal of what is India’s largest and most influential NGO.
Walter Andersen observed that he does not want “to appear too self-congratulatory, but this book is likely to be viewed as the authoritative book on the RSS for some time, as was the earlier book, The Brotherhood in Saffron.” It is expected that a copy of the book will be presented to the Indian President at Rashtrapati Bhavan and also to Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
