CHANDIGARH: On the first death anniversary of Jaspal Bhatti, the Chandigarh traffic police today selected the famous comedian as its brand ambassador.
The city-based comedian had lost his life in a road accident near Jalandhar in Punjab.
The objective to select Bhatti as the brand ambassador is to ensure that no more precious life is lost in road accident, a police spokesman said here.
This year, emphasis has been laid on enforcement of traffic rules, the spokesman said.
“This year 2,09,870 offenders have been challaned till date as compared to 1,52,252 in the corresponding period last year for traffic rule violations,” he said.
A total of 87 fatal accidents has taken place in the city this year killing 89 persons, while there were 114 fatal accidents in the same period last year killing an equal number of people, he said.
Till October 23 this year, 55,004 challans were issued to bike riders without helmets while 36,925 similar challans were issued last year, he said.
“Overall 1,13,285 persons were educated this year on Road Safety as compared to 1,01,894 in the same period last year,” the spokesman said.
The spokesman said Chandigarh police had added 450 barricades, 50 portable speed bumps and 200 rechargeable LED flasher lights for better traffic management.-PTI
