CHICAGO: At a recent meeting, the Board of Trustees of Chicago State University, on the recommendation of the University Honorary Degree Committee, unanimously voted to award an honorary Doctorate of Humane Letters to Nara Chandrababu Naidu, the Chief Minister of the Andhra Pradesh State, India.
The only previous head of government to receive an honorary doctorate from Chicago State University was President Gerald Ford.
“The University has bestowed its highest honor on the Chief Minister in recognition of his extraordinary ability to envision, plan, and successfully execute the transformative changes for the good of the people of the undivided state of Andhra Pradesh,” said CSU Professor Dr. Rohan Attele.
“The Chief Minister’s visit to our University will advance the public interest, cultivate mutual understanding between the two peoples, stimulate enhanced educational opportunities for the underserved populaces of Illinois and Andhra Pradesh, promote commerce between the two states, and it will lay the foundation exciting economic opportunities in our communities.”
The Chief Minister will meet with business leaders, political dignitaries, and entrepreneurs during his visit to Chicago State University’s south side campus in April. He will also make a major address on the story of Andhra Pradesh to help make the business leaders aware of the opportunities in Andhra Pradesh and set the tone for new economic roadmap based on growing the IT industry in Chicago and Illinois.
“This is a unique opportunity to build a partnership with an international leader who has shown significant success in creating economic opportunity for underserved communities,” CSU Provost Angela Henderson said. “Through this new partnership we look to not only grow CSU’s international student base, but create broader opportunities for our students who come to us from our surrounding communities.
“Jawaharlal Nehru Technological University at Kakinada, JNTUK, and Chicago State University is a recipient of the prestigious Obama-Singh grant award. The Chief Minister’s visit will enable us engage India at a higher level and enhance our collaborative efforts with our partner institutions in Andhra Pradesh, JNTUK and Jawaharlal Nehru Technological University at Anantapur, JNTUA.
“The Chief Minister visits the University in challenging times but also at a defining moment in its history. As the University looks back at its past 149 years of service, it also looks forward to the next 150 years of service with renewed hope, determination, and courage.”
