City of Fremont raises Diwali flag to celebrate Festival of Lights

Fremont City held the Diwali Day flag raising ceremony to celebrate Festival of Lights – Diwali on Monday, October 20th at 12 noon. This was a glorious occasion, attended by a large number of community members dressed in traditional attires with Fremont city Mayor and Councilmembers in attendance. It was of immense significance to all of Indian community as it showcases the community’s contributions in making Fremont a culture rich, diverse, safe and happy community.

Addressing the gathering, Mayor Raj Salwan said “Diwali is a festival of joy that signifies victory of Light over darkness and is very relevant today”

FOG Founder, Dr. Romesh Japra said “Diwali represents the core Indian values of safety, prosperity, and happiness, for all. Diwali is not just for Hindu Americans but for all Americans embodying ‘Vasudhaiva Kurumbakam’ (the whole world is one family.)

Fremont is the first city in California and perhaps US, to honor Diwali in this fashion.
