CHICAGO: Congressman Raja Krishnamoorthi hosted a Unity Breakfast and Community Discussion April 25 at Masjid Darus Salam in Lombard. Congressman Krishnamoorthi’s Unity Breakfasts bring together religious and secular leaders in the Eighth Congressional District to discuss issues of concern to all members of the ethnically, culturally, and religiously diverse Indian American community.

This time, the breakfast discussion focused on the increasing incidents of hate crimes, especially given the most recent attacks in Christchurch, New Zealand, and Sri Lanka. Unity Breakfast 4.25.19 Krishnamoorthi

The planning committee included members of United for Peace and CIOGC along with the Congressman’s office. The interactive discussion was facilitated by Shalini Gupta from United for Peace.
Julie Justicz from Chicago Lawyers’ Committee for Civil Rights presented facts and data on hate crimes to set the background for the discussion. Participants were led through an interactive workshop to discuss in small groups, key causes and potential solutions to mitigate hate crimes. The session ended with the formation of task forces to carry this work forward on key solutions identified by the group that included community solutions, interfaith meetings and educational initiatives.

The event was attended by several elected representatives, state representative Dianne Pappas and staff of State Representative Deb Conroy, Laura Murphy, Dupage County Sheriff Jim James Mendrick, and Lombard Village Manager Scott Niewoehner.

Over 100 people with several community leaders of the Muslim, Hindu, Sikh, Christian and other faiths also attended the event.
