CHICAGO: Indian tabla master Zakir Hussain and legendary jazz bassist Dave Holland bring their revolutionary project Crosscurrents to Symphony Center Tuesday, May 1 at 8 p.m. as a part of the Symphony Center Presents (SCP) Jazz series.
In this collaboration, saxophonist Chris Potter and four of India’s most compelling jazz musicians join Holland and Hussain to create a fascinating musical dialogue.Building upon years of collaboration between Hussain and Holland, Crosscurrents is an exploration of the commonalities between jazz and Indian classical music and the mutual influence on their respective musical cultures.
The project takes the central theme of improvisation and threads it through both Indian classical music and jazz disciplines, creating a singular musical experience at the nexus of Eastern and Western cultures. Hussain and Holland are joined by celebrated American saxophonist Chris Potter, who is also a member of Holland’s Overtone Quartet, and four of India’s most distinguished jazz musicians—Shankar Mahadevan on vocals, Louiz Banks on keyboards, Sanjay Divecha on guitar and Gino Banks on drums.
Zakir Hussain’s career spans both composition and performance and he is considered a world music phenomenon and classical tabla virtuoso. Highlights of his career include co-composing the opening music for the Summer Olympics in Atlanta, working with choreographer Alonzo King and the Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater, and composing his work Kolam for Yo-Yo Ma’s Silk Road Project. His first-ever tabla concerto received its U.S. premiere with the National Symphony Orchestra in April 2017.
Jazz Master Dave Holland has made a name as one of the world’s leading jazz bassists. With a career spanning over five decades, Holland has made his mark as both a sideman and a leader. After years of performing with the likes of Miles Davis, Betty Carter and Chick Corea, Holland formed several of his own ensembles including the quartets Prism and Overtone; his quintet featuring saxophonist Chris Potter. His notable big band.Holland is the recipient of three Grammy Awards: two for Best Large Jazz Ensemble Album and one for Best Jazz Instrumental Performance, Individual or Group. Holland is currently artist-in-residence at the Royal Academy of Music and the University of Miami.
