CHICAGO: Hamdard Center, a not-for-profit health and social service agency in Chicagoland, held its 20th Annual Gala titled “Building Our Legacy” at the Donald E. Stephens Convention Center in Rosemont, Illinois on October 13.
The Hamdard Center was established by late Dr Farzana Hamid and Dr Mohammad Hamid in 1992 as a proactive response to address the critical mental health needs of the South Asian, Middle Eastern, Bosnian and other minority communities in the Greater Chicago area. Its philosophy is to meet the needs of the underserved through its new paradigm of care, which includes a comprehensive service model to provide culturally-sensitive and linguistically-appropriate services to individuals and families.
More than 750 people attending the event were regaled by spirited Emcee of the event, comedian Khaleel. The Farzana F Hamid Community Service awards were given to founding members Dr Syed Hashmat Anwar, Dr Firdaus Jafri, Dr. Arif Azam and Dr Mohammad Hamid. Michael Espe from Zaffarano auctioneers introduced the client testimonial “Priya, A story of Hope” of a Hamdard client who received shelter at Hamdard’s domestic violence shelter.
Michael moved the evening to the live auction segment which raised over $90,000 alone. During dinner Khaleel entertained the guests with his raucous comedic act. Moghul Music announced the beginning of the fashion show conducted by Sahil in conjunction with Kalapriya dancers. The exclusive Royal Bride collection was shown with Raja Umang Hutheesing flying from India to attend the gala.
The evening ended with the renowned Sa Re Ga Ma Pa finalist Amanat Ali performing his hit songs and delighting the crowd. Hamdard Center raised over $220,000 to support its seven programs – Domestic violence, which includes the transitional housing program, Senior services, Youth services, Primary and mental health services, and Case management.
