SPRINGFIELD, Ill.: State restrictions are largely limiting potential sites for growing and selling medical marijuana in Illinois’ capital city. And it’s likely the rules could have a similar impact in other communities.
The (Springfield) State Journal-Register reports Springfield officials are considering zoning for medical cannabis cultivation centers and dispensaries.
Illinois’ medical cannabis pilot program prohibits dispensaries within 1,000 feet of a school, day care center or child care facility. Cultivation centers must be 2,500 feet away.
Dispensaries and cultivation centers also are banned from residential areas.
In Springfield, maps prepared by planning officials show small pockets of centrally located areas could accommodate a dispensary. But much of the city will be off-limits.
Still, a local lobbyist says at least one group of investors is eyeing a site for a Springfield dispensary. -AP
