Dr. Sampat Shivangi, a pioneering Indian-American physician, community leader, and advocate, passed away on Feb 10 in a hospital following a brain hemorrhage. He was in his early 80s. His life’s work, spanning medicine, public health, and Indo-American relations, leaves behind an enduring legacy of dedication and impact.
Dr. Sampat Shivangi is an Indian-born American physician renowned for his significant contributions to healthcare, philanthropy, and public service. He began his medical education at Kasturba Medical College in Manipal, India, earning his M.B.B.S., and later obtained postgraduate degrees (M.D. and D.G.O.) from Karnataka Medical College in Hubli. In 1976, he migrated to the United States, where he completed a fellowship at Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis, Missouri.
Throughout his career, Dr. Shivangi has held several prominent positions, including serving as an advisor to the U.S. Secretary of Health and Human Services from 2005 to 2008 and being a member of the Mississippi State Board of Health. He was the founding president of the American Association of Physicians of Indian Origin in Mississippi and has been actively involved in the India Association of Mississippi.
His philanthropic efforts are extensive, both in the United States and India. Notably, he played a pivotal role in establishing a Hindu temple in Jackson, Mississippi, and has been a strong advocate for mental health, serving on the Mississippi State Board of Mental Health. In India, through the Dr. Sampat Shivangi Foundation, he has initiated projects in education, healthcare, and community development, including the establishment of schools and healthcare facilities.
Dr. Shivangi’s contributions have been recognized with several prestigious awards, such as the Ellis Island Medal of Honor in 2008 and the Pravasi Bharatiya Samman Award in 2017, the highest honor conferred upon overseas Indians by the Government of India.
In December 2024, his philanthropic vision took concrete form with the inauguration of the KLE Dr. Sampat Kumar S. Shivangi Cancer Hospital, a project spearheaded in collaboration with Dr. Prabhakar Kore, chairman of the KLE Society. The hospital, inaugurated by Indian President Droupadi Murmu, stands as a testament to Dr. Shivangi’s unwavering commitment to improving healthcare access, particularly in underserved regions.
