ANAHEIM: On July 30, over 50 people shared a Ramadan Iftar at CAIR-LA’s Anaheim office.
The night included an international menu that was seemingly endless – spaghetti and meat sauce, samosas, Libyan soup, hummus, batengan (eggplant dish), noodle and rice dishes, pastas, and a wide array of delectable desserts were all served.
What was reflected however, was the diversity in not just the dishes that were served but, particularly, in the guests that attended the event. Attendees represented individuals from various backgrounds and walks of life. Individuals from different faiths were represented. There were also a good number of community leaders and young people who attended.
“As we look around this room, full of our brothers and sisters from the Muslim community, the interfaith community, civil rights advocacy organizations, and other communities of color, we cannot truthfully exclaim that we are alone in the work we do to improve our greater society,” said CAIR-LA Programs Coordinator Zienab Abdelgany in a speech addressed to attendees. “We are a good many who represent a good many more.”
“The act of fasting during this month, of denying ourselves food and drink from sunrise to sunset, reminds us of the multitudes who don’t have the circumstance or time or state of mind to eat a good, hearty meal in relative safety in the company of dear friends,” Abdelgany said. “Let’s take a moment to remember and pray for the true fasters, whose stories inspire us to work, to work hard and to work together.”
In the spirit of remembering God’s blessings, attendees shared a moment of silence, contemplation, and prayer to think of and pray for those who are struggling around the world.
