CHICAGO: Sher-e-Punjab Sports and Cultural Club held its Annual International Kabaddi Cup and Volleyball Tournament at Busse Woods Forest Preserve, in Elk Grove Village, a north side suburb of Chicago on Sunday September 2, with a sizeable participation from enthusiastic teams and public.
It turned out to be a big festival of fun, food, live entertainment and sports. Despite uncertain weather in the morning people not only from Chicago land’s area but from Indiana, Michigan and Wisconsin came in large numbers to enjoy this sports plus festival.
Chief Guest was S. Ajit (Jay) Singh Walia of Wisconsin and Guest of Honor was S. Jasbir Singh Depty from Indianapolis.
In Kabaddi Cup matches the first prize was won by the host Sher-e Punjab Sports & Cultural Club, Chicago by defeating Kings Sports Club. Four teams competed in the open Kabaddi. The other two teams were Miri-Piri Sports Club Indianapolis and Harjit Sports Club Toronto, Canada.
In the volleyball tournament Chicago Light Out team defeated Shaheed Bhagat Singh Sports Club by 3-1 sets. A prayer and moment of silence was observed in the memory of those killed recently in shooting inside Oak Creek Gurdwara, WI.
There was lot of free food for the spectators who enjoyed Jalebi and Pakoras along with tea from Manak Royal Sweet. In lunch, chicken, chhole and rice were served by K K Pamma. The food was free and there was no entry of parking ticket. In the evening, Punjabi folk singer S. Baljit Malwa entertained the audience. A guest artist S. Tara Multani also presented a few songs.
Chairman S. Baldev Singh Salan thanked all sponsors making this event very successful with their generous donation. The sponsors were recognized and presented with plaques.
The board members of the club worked relentlessly to make the event success. Among them were S. Rachhpal Singh Khangura, S. Jaswinder Jassi, S. Jinder Benipal, S. Satnam Singh Minhas, S.
