CHANDIGARH: Punjab will set up a war independence memorial at Kartarpur near Jalandhar to showcase contribution of the state in the country’s freedom struggle.
The foundation stone laying ceremony of the Jang-e-Azaadi memorial (war independence memorial) will take place at Kartarpur in the month of August, an official statement released here said today.
The decision in this regard was taken during the meeting of Jang-e-Azaadi Memorial foundation under the Chairmanship of Punjab Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal here today, it said.
The upcoming memorial would be completed within two years by August 2016.
The foundation also approved the Executive Committee decision to engage the services of eminent film director Shyam Benegal for the preparation of a 90-minute film depicting Punjab’s stellar role in the freedom struggle.
The Chief Minister said the prestigious monument has been planned to showcase the rich legacy and the exemplary velour displayed by the countless freedom fighters, patriots and martyrs from Punjab during the independence movement.
“It is a unique project that has touched my soul and I want to create this film entirely in a new manner, that could stir emotions of our countrymen,” the statement said quoting Shyam Benegal.–PTI
