CHICAGO: Metropolitan Asian Family Service (MAFS) in association with Asian Health Coalition has implemented the “Pink Pashmina Project,” that reduces disparities in breast and cervical cancer screening rates for Muslims and South Asian Women in Chicago and Cook County.

MAFS is a lead agency in this project which shall be in effect for the period July 1, 2012 to June 30, 2013. The main objectives of this project are –
1) Raise community awareness of breast and cervical cancer in Asian women through culturally and linguistically appropriate education.
2) Promote early detection through routine breast and cervical screening.
3) Identify and address barriers to screening and care.
4) Facilities access to preventive care services for the uninsured.

Manmohan Sharma who is credited with extensive research on Cancer, its prevention and cure, observed in his recently published book that “call it ‘the Garden of Youth’ or call it ‘the Herb of Kings’. The name or adjectives do not matter, Basil is one of the oldest and most popular herbal plants, rich in many notable health benefiting phytochemicals. This highly prized plant is revered as “holy herb” in many traditions all over the world.

Anti-Cancer Benefits: The unique array of active constituents called flavonoids found in Basil provides protection at the cellular level. “Orientin” and “viceninare” are two water-soluble flavonoids that have been of particular interest in basil. In the studies conducted on human white blood cells; these components of basil protect cell structures as well as chromosomes from radiation and oxygen-based damage.

Cervical Cancer: A chemical constituent of Basil, known as caffeic acid, was tested in the study, conducted at Chung Shan Medical University, Taichung, Taiwan, and found to be effective against cervical cancer.

Skin Cancer: In the study, published in Food and Chemical Toxicology in November 1992, the researchers noted that the cumin seeds and basil leaves significantly decreased the incidence of skin cancer.

Liver, Stomach and Lung Cancers: Laboratory studies in India found that the antioxidant activity in basil has “the potential to block or suppress” liver, stomach, and lung cancers.

According to Ayurveda, basil is helpful in fighting cancer. If basil leaves are regularly consumed it can cure cancer too. It is believed that by simply consuming 20 basil leaves with water every day, many cancers can be prevented and cured.
