DETROIT, MI: Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, accompanied by a high-level trade delegation, was on a day-long official visit to Detroit, Michigan on June 30. The purpose of his visit was to promote trade, investments, manufacturing and economic cooperation between Michigan and Maharashtra.
The Chief Minister had an interactive session with the US trade and industry representatives, besides officials of the Michigan Economic Development Corporation (MEDC) and office of the Governor of Michigan. The Chief Minister also visited the General Motors and had discussions with their top executives.
While addressing the Business Meet at the Renaissance Center in Detroit, the CM described Maharashtra as the most industrialized state in India contributing around 15% to India’s GDP. He said that just like Michigan, Maharashtra is the powerhouse for the automobile and auto sectors and there is immense synergy between the two states.
Indian Consul General Dr Ausaf Sayeed also addressed the Business Meet and mooted the idea of forging an economic partnership between Maharashtra and Michigan as ‘Partner States’ and establishing a ‘Sister-City’ relationship between Detroit and Pune, as both these cities complement each other in the automobile and auto parts sector.
CG Sayeed added that Governor Rick Snyder is keen on strengthening Michigan’s economic partnership with India particularly in the fields of automobiles, auto parts, IT, telecom, agriculture, food processing and hydrocarbons.
A high-level investment mission from the Michigan Economic Development Corporation (MEDC) visited India from March 2-8 and met with senior officials of MEA, MoCI, MoF, Ministry of Heavy Industries & Public Enterprises, RBI and EXIM Bank. A follow-up trade and investment delegation would be visiting India in October.
India exports goods roughly worth $ 1 billion annually to Michigan. Indian companies Mahindra, Tata and HCL have set up manufacturing units in Michigan.
