CHICAGO: Nimish Jani, the first Indian American running for re-election to Schaumburg Township Board, coasted to victory last week in a closely fought race where town candidates ran for four seats.
The victory margin was modest but that was the case for all candidates since overall turnout of voters was only 11 percent out of eligible voters of over 76,000. Nimish could have been on the top but for the huge apathy shown by Indian Americans. It is believed that out of 6000 plus registered voters only 1500 came to cast their votes despite huge cajoling by a good number of volunteers and Nimish supporters.
It is high time that Indian Americans, though relatively small in numbers, can make a difference at all levels of administration if only they understand the political system here and the importance of getting into the mainstream politics, observed Jitendra Diganvker, an ardent supporter. Nirav Patel, another activist lamented that “we come in numbers to voice our grievances but we have to understand that the solution is not in shouting but asking our viewpoints prevail. And that can only happen if we actively get involved in the system.”
Many know relatively little about township government. Townships offer a broad range of services and assistance to citizens that reside within them and utilize significant paid staff, facilities and equipment paid for by our local tax dollars.
As taxpayers, it is important to know that these resources are being used wisely and effectively. Good thing that this is done via balanced budgets and without increasing the tax levy for years. That goal is attainable when township trustees like Nimish Jani are on the Board and that is where Indian American voters can play an important role getting them elected with a thumping majority.
Thanking the Schaumburg voters Nimish Jani said “Dear friends, Allow me to thank you profoundly for your support in my election, in spite of very tough opposition. I was able to overcome many obstacles because of your unstinted support. I request you not only to extend this type of support in all my endeavors but also to keep enlisting more support in the future.”
