SKOKIE: Members of Indian community in Niles and Skokie celebrated India’s 65th Republic Day on the afternoon of January 11 at the Petty Auditorium in Skokie Public Library with cultural music and dance performances. The event was organized by the new board of Indian Community of Niles Township (ICNT) under the leadership of Rohit Joshi, President and former president Usha Kamaria.
The event was interspersed with remarks by the organizers, Chief Guest, Chintal Mehta, CEO, Care For Soul organization, Mayor George Van Dusen of Skokie Village, director of Skokie Public Library, Carolyn Anthony, Trustee of Schaumburg Township and various guests. Among the other dignitaries present were Pramod Shah, Village Clerk, the director of Skokie Park District, superintendent Mike Reid, Rishikant Singh, Manager of Air India, Om Prakash Kamaria, President, Gandhi Memorial Trust, and prominent community leaders.
Ramanbhai Patel with his group of United Senior Parivar members, holding flags and chanting slogan “Vande Mataram”, entered in the auditorium followed by the auspicious lamp lighting ceremony performed by Rohit Joshi, Chintal Mehta and Mayor Van Dusen. Rohit Joshi explained the significance of lamp lighting ceremony. Mayor George Van Dusen appreciated ICNT activities. He also introduced Pramod Shah and other officers from Skokie Village Hall. Amita Bhargav, Secretary, ICNT emceed the program very well.
Chintal Mehta made the audience aware about her organization. Nimish Jani, trustee of Schaumburg said that Indians can make a difference in the community by voting at the time of election. DJ Nilesh kept the crowd entertained during the show.
The event showcased dance performances by the Payaliya Dance Studio, Vinyas Bollywood Dance Classes and Kalapadma Dance Academy. Vocal performances of both old and current Bollywood songs by Shaila Khedkar, Santosh Varghese, Rajesh Chalam and Jitendra Bulsara were a hit with the crowd. Rishikant Singh, Manager, Air India congratulated Rohit Joshi and his team for celebrating Republic Day of India together.
