Rajjo courtesan

kangna_ranautKangana Ranaut is all set to woo audiences as a courtesan in Rajjo. Given that the film was based in Mumbai, the actress, originally from North India, got to experience Marathi culture closely.

“Apart from, my director Vishwas Patil (also the film’s writer), many others on the set were Maharashtrian too. They would communicate in Marathi with each other and as a result, I got to practice and learn a new language. I can’t speak it fluently yet, but I can understand it,” says Kangana, who has a few Marathi dialogues in the film.

About nautch girls, she says, “Contemporary courtesans aren’t Umrao Jaans or Pakeezahs backed by princes or kings. They have to suffer to earn their daily bread. It was saddening to see their situation first-hand.”

The actress got to sample Maharashtrian cuisine prepared by her director’s wife on the set. “This film was the closest I got to interact with Marathi culture.” she says. But, it doesn’t end there. She got to shoot in the Adivasi areas of Raigarh district and also got to do Lavani with the legendary Gulab Bai. “There are scenes of us learning the dance from her in the film. It was an honor,” she adds.
