During Pitru Paksha, the food prepared is sattvic that is pure, simple, and free of onion, garlic, and non-vegetarian items. The dishes are made with respect and simplicity to honor ancestors, as it is believed the offerings provide peace and spiritual nourishment to the departed souls.

Kheer – This creamy sweet Rice Keer/pudding is a staple offering during Pitru Paksha.

Ingredients

  • 1/3 cup rice
  • 1 liter milk
  • 70 grams sugar
  • Saffron (optional)
  • Crushed cardamom
  • Chopped almonds

Method

  • Wash the rice thoroughly. In a heavy-bottomed pot, combine the rice, milk, and saffron (if using).
  • Bring the mixture to a boil, then reduce the heat to low. Simmer, stirring occasionally, until the rice is cooked and the milk has thickened and reduced.
  • Add the sugar and crushed cardamom, and continue to cook for another 4-5 minutes until the sugar dissolves completely.
  • Garnish the kheer with chopped almonds and serve it for offering.

OR.

  • You can make plane rice first. In the heavy bottom pan, boil the milk and do not let it form a creamy layer on the top. Keep stirring in between.
  • Add saffron (if you wish to use it), add sugar into the milk and then, add cooked rice. Cook it for another 4 to 5 minutes and then garnish it with chopped almonds and serve it for offering.
