FREMONT, CA: Ro Khanna, intellectual property attorney and candidate for California’s 17th congressional district, has issued a statement on the White House announcement of legislative recommendations and executive orders addressing patent reform.
His statement says, “I am very encouraged by the President’s leadership on increasing transparency and confronting abuse in our outdated patent system. I fully support the Administrations proposals as they seek to protect consumers, early stage startups and larger high-tech companies from frivolous and costly litigation.
“In addition to the President’s suggestions for curbing abuses from Patent Assertion Entities, or “patent trolls”, Congress needs to increase funding for the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office (PTO) so that they can issue higher quality patents in a more expedient fashion, better align with international patent authorities to allow American businesses to export intellectual property, and coordinate with other relevant government agencies that can help businesses grow. Supplementing increased funding for the PTO, Congress should allocate additional resources to entities such as the Small Business Administration and the Commerce Department’s Export Offices.
“Overall, these suggestions are just the start of a larger effort to get the government to support a comprehensive strategy on facilitating innovation. With stakeholder input,Congress must immediately begin the process of crafting wide reaching legislative to reform our outdated patent regime.
“If elected to Congress, I plan to introduce a comprehensive economic growth and innovation agenda so that government can facilitate – and stop impeding – innovation. Until then, I will continue to advocate for the innovation economy, and fight to end practices that are harming Silicon Valley’s ability to continue producing world-changing technology,” he concluded.
