CHICAGO: NRI Press Club joined by a large number of Indian Americans paid tributes and saluted a young Indian freedom fighter who laid down his life hundred years ago on September 19, 1915.
Jatindranath Mukherjee (Jaitn Bagha) fought the British rule tooth and nail with his young comrades and died a martyr in Balsore hospital after being wounded in a gun battle with British soldiers.
Inspired by Swami Vivekananda, Jatin had expressed his ideals in simple words: “Amra morbo, jagat jagbe” – “We shall die to awaken the nation”
Charles Tegart, the Intelligence Chief and Police Commissioner of Bengal said of Jatin: “Though I had to do my duty, I have a great admiration for him. He died in an open fight.” Later in life, Tegart admitted: “Their driving power was immense: if the army could be raised or the arms could reach an Indian port, the British would lose the War”.
And another lion from Bengal, Subhash Chandra Bose, did exactly that and got to the Indian border scaring British rulers to death. “But for this courageous act of Netaji Bose the British would be still sitting on Indians neck,” said Madhu Patel NRI Pres Club Founding president.
