NEW YORK: The newly-formed Institute of Bollywood Dance and Film (IBDF) is opening its doors this month to welcome Bollywood’s legendary choreographer SAROJ KHAN to teach dance workshops to anyone with the desire to learn from one of the greatest artistic figures in the history of Indian cinema.
The workshops will be held in New Jersey: September 21-23 (YMCA Edison, 1775 Oak Tree Road, Edison,NJ) and New York City: September 28-30 (Dance New Amsterdam, 280 Broadway, 2nd floor)
Saroj Khan is a pioneer in Bollywood, widely known for her innovative and classical technique-based choreography. Saroj Khan’s visionary mind helped the Bollywood superstar Madhuri Dixit, along with several other starlets, achieve significant career successes and a meteoric rise to fame. Her teachings of grace, strength, precision, subtlety and expressiveness have graced some of the most iconic songs in Bollywood. Her projects include choreography in feature films Lagaan, Don, Jab We Met, Love Aaj Kal, Agneepath, Agent Vinod, Veer-Zara, Devdas, Bride and Prejudice, Tezaab, Khalnayak, and Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge, among several other blockbuster films.
The Institute of Bollywood Dance and Film is a new and unique training arena for performers looking for potential careers in the Indian film industry. “We’re looking to bridge the gap between passionate amateur performers and working professionals,” says IBDF founder Rujuta Vaidya, “while providing extraordinary training and networking opportunities to individuals who are interested in moving towards a career in the performing arts, especially in Bollywood.”
Rujuta Vaidya, an acclaimed choreographer herself, has worked with Britney Spears on her 2009 “Circus” Tour, The E! Network “Morning Show,” The Black Eyed Peas 2010 “E.N.D.” Tour, Oprah Winfrey’s Oscar Special, The Slumdog Millionaire Academy Award winning track “Jai Ho” with A.R. Rahman and John Legend at the Oscars, Disney Channel’s “Cheetah Girls: One World” feature film, and the “Journey Home” A.R. Rahman 2010 World Tour.
In addition to these recent projects, Vaidya has also worked on various Bollywood films over the last decade, her most recent being Sridevi’s comeback movie, “English Vinglish.” One of Vaidya’s most high profile assignments was choreographing Priyanka Chopra’s NFL commercial (featuring music by artist Will.I.Am), which will be aired before every Thursday night game on the NFL network.
Rujuta Vaidya has trained extensively for years in India under Saroj Khan and is her only disciple in the United States, and she is paralleling her Indo-American career by bringing one of Bollywood’s greatest women to some of America’s biggest cities.
