Various kinds of lights manifest during meditation owing to concentration. For those who concentrate on the Trikuti, the space between the two eyebrows, the light appears on the forehead in the Trikuti or the third eye center, while for others who concentrate on the top of the head, Sahasrara Chakra, the light manifests on the top of the head. The light is so powerful and dazzling sometimes, that you have to withdraw yourself from looking at it and break the meditation. Some people are afraid and do not know what to do and how to proceed further.
In the beginning, these lights are not steady. They come and disappear immediately. They flash out from above the forehead and from the sides. They cause peculiar sensations of extreme joy and happiness and there is an intense desire for a vision of these lights.
When you have a steady and systematic practice of meditation, these lights appear more frequently and remain steadily for a long time. The vision of the lights is a great encouragement in the path of Sadhana.
It impels you to stick steadily to meditation. It gives you strong faith also in superphysical matters.
The appearance of the light denotes that you are transcending the physical consciousness. You are in a semi-conscious state when the light appears. You are between two planes. You must not shake the body when these lights manifest. You must be perfectly steady in the Asana. You must breathe very, very slowly.
In spiritual progress, the light is a good sign of progress.
When one is meditating, prana becomes one with apana. When you get a machine going there is a lot of activity. Similarly, when prana and apana unite, there is a lot of action and reaction with the five basic elements, earth, air, fire, water and space.
These mixed with your own sanskara and create the experiences of flashes of different colors. The colors you see in meditation depend on which element is acting most on you. Earth is yellow, water is white, fire is red, air is green and space is blue-black.
Also seeing colors during meditation is a common, healing experience. According to Eastern healing systems, each color relates to a specific chakra or energy center in the body, so when you see a given color, it means that healing is taking place in that area of the body. If you see green colors, for example, your heart chakra is being rejuvenated and renewed. Visions of blue indicate that the throat chakra area is healing itself.
Q: Sometimes when I am asleep I am awakened by a large, strong light in front of me. It makes me shake. The dazzling light brighter than the sun comes and fades away quickly.
Generally, the light is your own and is not from outside. This is the light of your soul and it is not separated from you. There are nine kinds of light of the soul. They are like fog, like smoke, like the sun, like the moon, like fire, like water, like electricity, like fireflies and like crystals. Different people experience a different kind of lights. Light is a sign of your spiritual progress.
Sometimes you may see a light that need not be connected with you at all. During sleep or meditation, your inner being may contact someone else’s inner being, and the light you see is not your own, but his.
