ORANGE COUNTY, CA: In support of the annual Susan G. Komen ‘Race for Cure’, Sikh Women Now (SWN) participated in the Breast Cancer Walkathon held on September 23 in Orange County. More than 100 walked the 5K loop around Fashion Island, Newport Beach to boost morale and support 2.5 million breast cancer survivors awaiting cure.
Sikh men in their maroon turbans stood out among the cheering crowd as the overhead microphone recognized and endorsed the presence of the Sikh American community by the announcement “Sikh Americans are in the house”. The Sikh community was warmly welcomed, and, received tremendous exposure and appreciation from thousands of people present there.
SWN also connected the South Asian community by hosting a Women’s Forum Tea Party on September 22 to educate and spread awareness about the diagnosis and prevention of breast cancer in women of Indian origin living in the United States. The guest speaker, Dr. Chaitali Nangia, M.D. UCI Medical Center with specialty in Oncology, captured the attention of the women present with valuable medical information pertinent to this ethnic group.
On September 15, SWN also participated at the Irvine Women’s Interfaith Conference “No Longer Strangers, But Friends” – Learning Through Faithful Women in Every Belief. Their devotional hymn “Shabad” were greatly appreciated and they were thanked for enlightening and educating the members of the conference about the Sikh faith, and the values and principles for which it stands. SWN spread the all encompassing, universal message of unity in diversity, which was experienced by all present there.
