UNL health center to be managed by UNMC

UNL health center to be managed by UNMCLINCOLN, Neb.: Within weeks, the University of Nebraska-Lincoln will transfer management of its on-campus health center to the University of Nebraska Medical Center.

The transfer will take place on July 1, the Lincoln Journal Star reported. UNMC will form a long-range plan on how to operate the health center after getting input from students, faculty, staff and the health center’s advisory board.

UNL Chancellor Harvey Perlman informed the health center staff about the management transfer.

The school had worked with a Lincoln hospital system, Bryan Health, to take over operations of the center and build a new $14.4 million building by December 2014, but the University of Nebraska Board of Regents rejected that contract.

Perlman reached out to UNMC to manage the health center, UNMC Chancellor Jeffrey Gold said in a news release. UNMC plans to build a referral network with specialty partners in Lincoln and Omaha.

“We are taking on this responsibility because we have expertise in the areas of health care management and delivery, which have grown increasingly complex,” Gold said.

UNL officials said it’s common to have university health clinics run by the university’s medical schools.
The plans do not affect any current health center staff, UNL officials said.

The concept to build a new UHC facility remains in place, UNL spokesman Steve Smith said, but no timeline has been set to complete a final plan or begin construction. -AP
