Women Empowerment Telugu Association (WETA), a global organization to empower women and young girls was launched in 2019 and for the first time participated at the FOG India parade on Aug 21 at Fremont. The iconic India Day fair and parade has been celebrated for the past 30 years in the City of Fremont.

Women empowerment is necessary for the socio-economic development of any country. In the changing dynamics of society, women empowerment is much talked about and equal opportunities and facilities are available to all. But in reality, all women do not enjoy equal status.

Women often face discrimination and gender inequalities, with some women experiencing multiple discrimination and exclusion because of factors such as background and caste. It may be pointed out that women empowerment largely depends on three factors i.e., economic, social and political identity. Women can be truly empowered only when all these three factors are made positive and compatible with each other. Again, all these three factors are correlated with skill development. Improving skills is a way to develop women’s empowerment and inclusion in all strategic sectors, WETA works at these developments for a better tomorrow, said Jhansi Reddy, Founder, WETA.

As the adage goes “rising tides lift all boats”— we at WETA want our organization to be the rising tide that lifts all the women and young girls. We have a strong and dedicated executive team comprising only 25 women—but, if you see our achievements, we are no less. This is mainly because of the hundreds of volunteers, donors and sponsors that support us across the globe, said Jhansi Reddy, President and Founder, WETA.

The organization’s mission is to empower Women and Young Girls. They envision this by contributing to their education, health, and welfare. They are also currently focusing on creating self-employment opportunities, fighting social issues such as domestic violence or abuse, and on personality development—building confidence, and overcoming the fear of social barriers.

The team consists of President and Founder Jhansi Reddy, President elect Sailaja Kalluri, Advisory Abhiteja Konda, Secretary Anuradha Yelisetty and core WETA team said they are not just a Telugu Organization, WE ARE an organization dedicated to WOMEN EMPOWERMENT. The empowerment can be professional (education, skill development) or at personal level—(health, well being, overcoming and fighting social issues such as abuse, domestic violence, etc.).

WETA 1In the parade they presented a tableau consisting of several Indian women who were the SUCCESSFUL FIRSTS in their respective fields starting all the way from great Queen Rani Rudramadevi.

  • Indira Gandhi – First Woman Indian Prime Minister
  • Mother Theresa – Social Activist
  • Priya Jhingan – First Woman to Join Indian Army and become a Major
  • Kiran Bedi – First woman IPS
  • Pratibha Patil – First woman President of India
  • Kalpana Chawla – First Indian woman Astronaut
  • On the float they had their next Gen WETA kids dressed up and welcoming everyone. They won the best community initiative award in FOG India Day parade and the award was presented by Grand Marshal Abhimanyu Dasani and Dr Romesh Japra, Chairman, FIA.

Women, if given the opportunities and the right exposure, can excel themselves in any field. Since girls and women represent 50 per cent of the world population, enabling them to participate in their local economies helps broaden the employment pool, added Anu Alisetty, WETA Team member.
