SAN FRANCISCO: World-famous singer Mika Singh was in the San Francisco Bay Area as part of his international tour. In the past few years, he has taken the Indian music industry by storm. He is possibly the most popular singer in India today, with multiple consecutive hit songs. His performances are sought after across the globe.
In an interview with India Post, Mika spoke about his popularity, his inspiration and his ambition to be a music director. Here are excerpts from the interview:
How did you first start singing?
I have been singing for many years now. I come from a family of musicians and my father and I would play the tabla together at gurudwara. Later, I began playing the guitar in shows with my brother, Daler Mehndi. In 1998, I joined the music industry and released my first album, “Sawan Main Lag Gayi Aag”.
You are an amazingly successful singer, topping charts across the nation. What is your secret?
It is by my parents’ blessings and God’s grace that I am able to give hit songs. I am selective in my song choices and am lucky to get all good songs to sing. I am also immensely grateful to my fans who love my songs and are responsible for my success.
Who is your inspiration?
My Brother Daler Mehndi, my family, RD Burman, Kishore Da and Mukesh Da inspire me.
How does it feel to be in San Francisco?
I am excited to be in the Bay Area. It holds a special place in my heart as many people close to me live here, including my brother, Harjeet Mehndi. I also began my international shows here.
If you had not become a singer, what would you be doing?
I always wanted to be a music director. But after releasing my first album, my future was set.
Besides singing, you also play many instruments. Tell us about this.
I can play fifty kinds of instruments. I started with the Tabla when I was eight, learning it from my father.
What message would you like to give to young people?
Always start with the basics and work hard. Patience and hard work are the keys to success.
