SHIMLA: Former Union Minister Girija Vyas today said Congress will not allow the Centre to implement new Land Bill and said farmers have become worst victims of apathy during the one-year rule of the BJP-led NDA government.
“Farmers have become worst victims of neglect and apathy during the one-year rule of the NDA government, which failed to give any relief to them even after natural calamities like unseasonal rains, damaging rabi crops over 200 lakh hectares of land,” she told reporters here.
“What restrained the Prime Minister from declaring the devastating rains and floods as national calamity,” she asked, alleging that the relief given to the farmers was like “rubbing salt on their wounds”.
Instead of helping the farmers, the Narendra Modi government was only serving the interests of the crony capitalist friends and the new Land Ordinance would help the NDA government to grab the lands of the farmers to benefit the capitalists, she claimed.
She said the UPA government had passed the Land Bill after due consultations with the political parties and stake holders to safeguard the interests of the farmers by inserting a consent clause and making social impact assessment as mandatory.
The Congress leader said the BJP government had not fulfilled any of the promises made to the people during the Lok Sabha elections and instead increased the hardships of the citizens.
However, Prime Minister Narendra Modi remains in election mode, she quipped.–PTI
