CHICAGO: Members of Indian community across US have strung a common note of sorrow and anguish banishing regional, religious and linguistic barriers at the sudden death of a former Indian President Dr Abdul Kalam – remembered and respected for his academic brilliance and intellectual honesty.
Midwestern Indian Americans – from Chicago, Detroit, Milwaukee to St Louis and Houston – held prayer and condolence meets to mourn Dr Kalam’s death and most of the meets were well attended by community leaders and members at large.
The Chicago Indian Consulate was among the first in announcing and mourning his death. A release from the Consulate said that it was a moment of shock that the nation heard of the sudden demise of former President Abdul Kalam even as he was engaged in talking to students. Dr A.P.J. Abdul Kalam , former President of India breathed his last at 19.45 hrs. on 27 July at at Bethany Hospital, Shillong.
A humble man, of humble origins, a great scientist, humanitarian, visionary, well meaning, and gentle person who won all our hearts.
India has lost a precious gem. We the people will truly miss him. Hope we have the strength to follow his timeless ideals in our lives. Deepest and heartfelt condolences to our fellow global citizens on this moment of grief and despair.
As a mark of respect to the departed dignitary, seven days State Mourning was declared in India and Indian Missions/Posts abroad. During the period of State mourning, our National Flag flew half-mast on all buildings where it is flown regularly and there was no official entertainment.
Mourning the death of Dr Kalam, Salil Mishra, president of the Association of Indians in America at one of its annual programs here in Hinsdale, paid rich tributes to Dr Kalam and urged all those gathered to observe silence for a minute.
