CHICAGO: NRI Press Club members paying their homage to the memory of late former President of India, Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam (1931-2015), observed that he was one of the India’s best known scientists and yet a deeply spiritual person at heart. A real secular leader, President Abdul Kalam embodied all religious thoughts: He was a devout Muslim quoting profusely from the Holy Quran on one hand and reciting at will from Hindu scriptures on the other. It is a known fact that he began his day with the words of the Bhagavad Gita.

In fact, at his first press conference after his nomination for the President’s role, Abdul Kalam recited verses from the Holy Gita. Dr. Kalam became the 11th President of India on July 25, 2002 and worked relentlessly for his vision of a developed nation till the last breath of his life -July 27, 2015.

Many of his poems and books, including Guiding Souls – Dialogues on the Purpose of Life, reveal the spiritual side of this great nation builder. Five poems from Kalam’s pen show his affinity towards age old Indian culture, namely Rakhi Day is Righteous Day; Guru Prakasham; Earth Shining in Glory; Radiating Message from Sree Siddaganga Maths
