CHICAGO: Manav Seva Mandir, a socio religious organization of Indian Americans in Bensenville, will be hosting a very special event – the launching of the historic Encyclopedia of Hinduism – on Saturday July 27.

Twenty-five years in the making, the product of more than 1000 esteemed scholars from around the world, totaling 11-volumes and approximately 7000 entries, the Encyclopedia of Hinduism is the first of its time in history that the depth and breadth of India’s great spiritual culture is made available in authentic, academic and scholastic form.

The Encyclopedia was conceived, inspired and blessed by one of India’s most beloved and revered spiritual leaders, Swami Chidanand Saraswatiji (founder of the Hindu-Jain Temple in Pittsburgh, and an inspiration behind innumerable Hindu/Jain temples throughout America and the world). It has been published by India Heritage Research Foundation of which Swami Chidanand Saraswatiji is the Founder/Chairman.

The Swami will be coming to Manav Seva Mandir for this historic launch event, where he will deliver an address on “Spirituality in Daily Life: The Eternal Message of Sanatan Dharma,” which will also include time for question-answer and a guided universal meditation.

Swamiji will be accompanied by Sadhvi Bhagawati Saraswati, PhD, the Managing Editor of the Encyclopedia, and an American graduate of Stanford University who has spent the last 17 years living in India, studying and serving under Swamiji. Sadhvi Bhagawati gives discourses, lectures, question-answer sessions and leads meditation at Parmarth Niketan and in travels around the world.

Swami Chidanand is also the president and spiritual head of one of India’s largest spiritual institutions, Parmarth Niketan Ashram in Rishikesh.

The Encyclopedia is truly a compendium of thousands of years of history, science, art, architecture, polity, religion, philosophy and culture. It is not limited to Hinduism as a religion, but rather provides all inclusive treatment of India’s spiritual culture (including in-depth coverage of Sikhism, Jainism and Buddhism, and aspects from Islamic and Christian traditions in India). The Encyclopedia was previewed and blessed at a huge ceremony in India by His Holiness the Dalai Lama and hundreds of India’s most revered spiritual, social and national leaders.

“We invite you all to come to be part of this historic event which will surely teach, touch and transform you. The program will take place in a mixture of Hindi, Gujarati and English, so be sure to bring your young ones and the second generation youth as well as well as there will be a great deal in English for them to understand and enjoy,” said Bharat Barai, a Mandir Trustee.
