California will hold a Recall Election against Governor Gavin Newsom on September 14 and potentially select a new governor on the same day from a list of 46 candidates. Secretary of State Shirley Webber, in this first ethnic media briefing since she took office on January 29, 2021, gave the details we need to inform our audiences, from when to expect mail-in ballots, to the number of candidates, to when the polls will open and close and the impact turnout.

Shirley Nash Weber, Ph. D was nominated to serve as California Secretary of State to succeed now U.S. Senator Alex Padilla. She is California ́s first Black Secretary of State and only the fifth African American to serve as a state constitutional officer in California ́s 170-year history.

The 2021 California gubernatorial recall election is an upcoming special election on whether to recall Governor Gavin Newsom scheduled to be held on September 14, 2021, with every voter set to receive a mail-in ballot, beginning August 16, 2021. Nearly four-dozen candidates will appear on the ballot as potential replacements, according to the secretary of state’s office.  Direct democracy is a big part of Golden State political culture. Since 1911, when California approved recalls as part of a sweeping Progressive-era reform package, 179 recall attempts have been made against state officeholders.

The ballot asks voters two questions: Should the governor be recalled? And if so, who should be the new governor? If the majority of voters say no to the first question, the second is moot. But if more than 50 percent vote yes, the candidate with the most votes becomes the next governor.
