CHICAGO: Hindi Lovers Club did not want it to be a big and august gathering. It just wanted a small well knit group of music lovers who could appreciate Hindi songs and help give a boost to a talented artist – though not professional but surely a very promising.
Close to four scores of members and guests gathered at Chicago Drama Theater in Chicago downtown despite inclement weather to listen to Ramesh Lulla, a businessman turned singing sensation. Lulla did not disappoint those attending his program rendering one after another 20 plus Hindi film songs of yesteryears with his melodious voice.
The time constraint prevented Lulla to render his selections alone and could not entertain the audience requests. Those present were so enamored that they felt like getting him invited again in a bigger platform. Gurbachan Kaur, founder president of Hindi Lovers Club, appeared well disposed to invite him for its annual gala or some such bigger event.
As she pointed out, the event had a twin-purpose – promoting Hindi in this area as also to give a platform to upcoming and budding artists to showcase their talent. Nirmal Shewakramani, who takes initiative for community oriented programs like hosting Devon Ka Raj Ganesh Ji, had heard Ramesh Lulla at a private event. He was so impressed by his talent that he pitched with the Hindi Lovers Club to host him for a select audience.
Ramesh Lulla entertained those present with his beautiful voice that took all down memory lane. He excelled with Kishore Kumar numbers and was also good with Mukesh and Rafi songs. The program lasted for nearly two hours.
