NEW DELHI: In another incident of the targeting of a Hindu man in Bangladesh, Shomir Kumar Das a resident of Daganbhuiyan upzilla of Feni district was murdered on January 11.
According to Feni Police Superintendent Shafiqul Islam, the victim had left home in his autorickshaw on Sunday night, but later went missing. His body was recovered around 2 am.
“Shomir Kumar Das had gone out with his auto-rickshaw after 8 p.m. that night, but after that, there was no trace of him. It was only after 2 a.m. that his body was found”, Shafiqul Islam, Police super of Feni, told ANI over the phone.
Police officials reached the spot, recovered the body, and completed all necessary legal formalities. A case has been registered regarding the incident, and an investigation is underway.
“The police, upon receiving the news, went to the scene, recovered the body, and completed all the necessary legal formalities. A case has also been filed in this regard. However, we haven’t been able to uncover any clues about the murder yet, nor have we been able to arrest anyone. But we are continuing our investigation and ongoing inquiries”, he added.
Citing the incident, Bharatiya Janata Party leader Amit Malviya on Tuesday mounted a strong attack on the Bangladesh interim government over alleged killings of religious minorities, claiming that “minority lives do not matter” in the country.
In a post on social media platform X, Malviya accused the interim government of failing to curb attacks on Hindus and other minorities, including Christians and Buddhists, and of not offering any reassurance to the affected communities.
“The interim government has made no effort to rein in the tormentors of Hindus and other religious minorities, including Christians and Buddhists. Nor has it offered even a word of solace. Instead, the man at the helm has dismissed these targeted attacks as “fiction.” The message is chilling: ,” Malviya wrote on ‘X’.
Highlighting the recent incident, the BJP leader said the assailants also looted Das’s autorickshaw, his only means of livelihood, and said the incident reflected what he termed sustained persecution of Hindus in Bangladesh since the advent of what he called the “unelected Yunus regime.”
“In yet another targeted attack on the Hindu community in Bangladesh, 28-year-old Samir Kumar Das was brutally killed on January 11 at Dagonbhuiyan in Feni. The attackers also looted his autorickshaw, his sole source of livelihood. This murder underscores the relentless persecution of Hindus in Bangladesh, who have been pushed to the brink of despair since the advent of the unelected Yunus regime,” Malviya said.
Malviya also targeted West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, warning that if she returns to power in the 2026 state elections, the situation for Hindu Bengalis in West Bengal would be “no different, in fact worse.”
“If Mamata Banerjee ever returns to power in 2026, Hindu Bengalis in West Bengal should harbour no illusions, it will be no different, in fact, it will be worse. The bloodstains of Horgobindo Das and his son Chandan Das have not even dried,” the ‘X’ post said. (ANI)
