CHICAGO: Dr Ausaf Sayeed, Consul General of India Chicago was given the Distinguished Community Leader of the Year 2015 Award by the Global Organization of People of Indian Origin (GOPIO) Chicago Chapter. The award was presented to him by Congressman Danny Davis at the Business Conference and Annual Gala of GOPIO Chicago held on Saturday, April 18 the Marriott Oak Brook. Among the distinguished guests present at the award ceremony were Congresswoman Tammy Duckworth, Congressman Danny Davis, Former Illinois Deputy Treasurer Raja Krishnamoorthi, Illinois State Senators, Don Kotowski, Tom Cullerton, Michael Nolan, Illinois Treasurer Michael Frerichs, Padmasree Dr Bala Balachandran & Oak Brook Mayor, Dr Gopal Lalmalani.
GOPIO’s Community Leadership Award recognizes an individual who demonstrates, initiative-driven leadership impacting the Indian community in the Midwest Region. Commenting on the award given to Dr Sayeed, Gladson Varghese, President of GOPIO Chicago said “I can think of no other individual who has shown such commitment to promoting the well being of the Indian Diaspora in the Midwest as Dr Sayeed. He makes it a priority to attend the celebrations & functions of the Indian community, listen to their grievances & and tries genuinely to solve their problems.
“He has taken several initiatives to promote trade and economic relations between India and the Midwestern states. He is a wonderful speaker, writer, intellectual and community leader. Dr Sayeed has endeared himself to the Indian community through his humility and accessibility and this award recognizes his innumerable services to our community”
Dr Ausaf Sayeed took charge as the Consul General of India, Chicago in August 2013. He has nearly 25 years of diplomatic experience. His father Awaz Sayeed was a renowned Urdu writer and humorist with seven books to his credit.
