NORTHERN CALIFORNIA: In a jubilant display of rich cultural heritage and community bonding, the Malayali Association of Northern California (MANCA) hosted its annual Onam Celebration, attracting more than 1,000 attendees. The event, held at Jnames Logan Auditorium in Union City, proved to be a resounding success, with a diverse array of cultural programs and a sumptuous traditional feast, or “sadya,” that left attendees raving.

The MANCA Onam Celebration has become a staple event in the Northern Californian Malayali community’s calendar, and this year’s edition exceeded all expectations. The event was a vibrant showcase of traditional art forms, music, and dance performances that captured the essence of Kerala’s cultural richness. Attendees were treated to a mesmerizing display of Chenda Melam, Thiruvathira, and other traditional dances that transported them to the heart of Kerala.

Raj Selwan – Councilmember, Fremont, inaugurated the event and other dignitaries who attended the event were Ajay Bhutoria, Representatives from various community based organizations and Past Presidents of MANCA. One of the highlights of the evening was the “sadya,” a traditional multi-course feast served on banana leaves. The aroma of freshly prepared dishes such as avial, sambar, thoran and payasam, filled the air making the attendees’ mouths water.

“It’s truly heartwarming to witness the Malayali community coming together in large numbers to celebrate Onam,” said Tom Charly, Secretary of MANCA. “This event is a testament to the unity and cultural pride that our community holds dear. It’s not just about the grandeur of the event, but also about the connections we forge and the memories we create.”

The event’s success was made possible by the dedicated efforts of numerous volunteers, event coordinators, and MANCA Board Members, who worked tirelessly to ensure every aspect of the celebration was executed flawlessly. From organizing the cultural performances to meticulously setting up the dining area with banana leaves and arranging the delectable dishes, the volunteers’ and MANCA teams’ hard work was evident in every detail.

MANCA’s Onam Celebration not only upheld the spirit of this cherished festival but also served as a reminder of the importance of preserving and celebrating cultural heritage in a foreign land.
