CHICAGO: Natya Dance Theatre will present SPANDA (a vibration) on Saturday, May 4 at Meteal Valley High School auditorium in Aurora, a south west suburb of Chicago.

The performance SPANDA is a unique opportunity to see the innovative work of one of the world’s most highly acclaimed Bharatanatyam troupes, under the leadership of Leela Samson of India.

SPANDA is symbolic of the enduring and perpetual energy that is the life force of the universe. It incorporates the philosophical concept of Prithvi as the center and source of energy in the universe and equates it with the Nabham, the womb as the origin of energy in the human body. The rediscovery of the basic movements of Bharatanatyam and the need for a reinterpretation of its traditional vocabulary challenges Spanda.

It seeks to establish a more relevant dialogue between dance, music and stagecraft. Choreographed by Leela Samson, Spanda means vibration and the eight talented dancers along with Leela will display a charismatic performance having a lingering effect in everyone’s mind.

Leela Samson is an alumnus of Kalakshetra. Her seemingly understated delineation conceals a powerful and inspired inner source, which gradually unfolds before the viewer. She is a virtuoso performer and a sensitive interpreter of the nuances of Bharatanatyam.
