Somnath Bharti terms NHRC report as biased

Somnath Bharti terms NHRC report as biasedNEW DELHI: Former Delhi Law Minister Somnath Bharti today termed the NHRC report which indicted him of “racial prejudice”, as biased and asked Lieutenant Governor Najeeb Jung to “remove the perception” that shows him in bad light.

“You are requested to do the needful and remove the perception of the report being biased and premeditative only to give clean chit to police and show me in bad color.

“Such perception will not only cast aspersions on your good office but also be a threat to the very fabric of which our country is made up,” Bharti said in a letter to the Lt Governor.

The AAP MLA from Malviya Nagar, who met Jung today, said that no effort was made to reach out to locals or three African victim girls to know their view point.

“Presiding officer has made no visible efforts to reach out to the locals or the three Ugandan girl-victims to know their point of view,” Bharti said.

He also questioned the leaking of the report to the media. “I am more shocked to learn the fact through newspapers that the report has got leaked to media and they have been showing me indicted by the inquiry committee which is not only damaging to my reputation but is a serious breach of confidentiality of your office,” Bharti added.

The NHRC on May 28 issued a show-cause notice to Delhi government asking it to explain as to why it should not be directed to pay compensation to the 12 African women victims of “racial prejudice” in the midnight raid by after its probe proved that there was “gross violation of human rights” in the case.

The report of NHRC’s Investigation Division as well as the inquiry report of BL Garg, retired Additional District and Sessions Judge, observed that it is prima facie proved that there was gross violation of human rights of the African women in the case.

As a minister, Bharti had allegedly raided residence of African women in Khirki extension early this year.–PTI
