Student-led fundraising effort for Sandy victims

NEVADA: An Indian origin student leader Navgeet (King) Zed recently led a successful Statewide effort across Nevada to raise funds for the victims of Hurricane Sandy.
Zed, is President of Truckee Meadows Community College (TMCC) Reno Student Government Association. Besides TMCC, he also involved Great Basin College Elko and Nevada State College Henderson in these fundraising efforts. All proceeds are going to the American Red Cross.
The “Hurricane Sandy Disaster Relief” fundraiser held at TMCC on November 19 and coordinated by Navgeet Zed featured entertainment, multi-faith prayers, silent auction, raffle and food. Various religious leaders lead prayers for the victims and the devastation. The entertainment included bands Shanti-Shanti and Slow Djinn Fez (a middle-eastern fusion band). Besides various TMCC groups, it also received the backing of many area businesses, non-profits and religious organizations.
Nevada Governor Brian Sandoval sent greetings for the fundraiser, commending the “kindness, support, and patriotism” and thanking for the “acts of kindness and generosity to help the families in need”. United States Senator Dean Heller sent a certificate on the occasion, recognizing the “commitment and dedication to helping those in need” and stating that “your volunteerism serves as an example to us all”.
Navgeet Zed has been Chairperson of Reno Youth City Council, President of International Club of University of Nevada-Reno, organized Night of All Nations (biggest multicultural event of northern Nevada) raising its attendance six-fold, volunteered for many organizations including a tenure at the area Crisis Call Center compassionately helping people in crisis and at the brink of suicide. For his many humanitarian efforts, Zed was bestowed with “Nevada Peacemaker of the Year” award.
