Teeyan Da Mela showcases Punjabi culture

CHICAGO IL: Punjabi American Organization (PAO) organized its11th annual “Teeyan Da Mela” on Sunday, July 26 at Bristol Palace Banquet in Mt Prospect. The “Ladies only” event Teeyan indicates great respect to women as mother/ daughter/ daughter-in-law binding the families together.

More than 600 ladies attended this event. The hall was packed with ladies and children dressed in colorful Indian clothes. This year PAO brought ‘Mrs Punjaban’ contest. Mrs Pamil Preet Dhillon won the crown and Mrs Raman Dhaliwal got 1st runner-up award. Mrs Mandeep Mann, winner of ” Shaunkan Mele Dee” crowned the winner and Gugani Gill, winner of Mrs Punjaban-Canada, crowned the runner-up.

The event started with the traditional Open dholki, where the audience was invited on stage to participate in singing Punjabi songs to keep up the Punjabi tradition of celebration. Ladies felt like they just came back to their parents’ home and enjoying ‘Saun da mahina’ in an Indian village. Punjabi singer Sunita Bhatti emceed the event and captivated the audience with her singing. Dance performances were performed by Hannah Singh, Simran Walia, Aarty Singla, Naina Singh, Maninder Chhabra and Sweta Bawa. Other local singers from Midwest region – Mrs Pooja Dhaliwal, Mrs Mona Bhalla, Simran K.

Dhaliwal and Mona Sharma showed their singing talent too.

Fashion show is the other aspect of Teeyan da Mela which ladies look forward to every year. This year the fashion show was sponsored by Richa from getethnic.com, co-ordinated by Neha Walia. Audience was stunned by various outfits showcased in this fashion show. All the models were local participants.

Gidha coordinated by Anshu Paul won the audience’s heart. At the climax of this event, almost all ladies and girls who attended “Teeyan Da Mela” were on “Gidha floor” with Sunita Bhatti encouraging the audience with numerous Bolian, followed by DJ.

Punjabi American Organization aims to promote unity and progress of all Punjabi Indian-Americans. There were different stalls for Mehndi, Jewelry, Gift Items, Punjabi suits and kurtis. In addition to Giddha, dholki, singing and dancing with live music, delicious Indian snacks and delicious gourmet lunch was served.

This year the Chief Guest was Mrs Satwant Kaur Kaler and Grand sponsor was Jasmeet Suga of Suga Builders. The Organizing Committee welcomed the audience and thanked all the sponsors for their generous donations. Food was catered by Maharaja Restaurant.
