The Epic Tale of an Anklet – Cilappatikaram will be staged at Chabot Performing Arts Center on November 12th, 2023, with the artists Shobha Subramanian as Kannagi, Prasanna Ravi as Kovalan, and Urmi Chakraborty as Madhavi. This epic love story is the most talked about story over the ages. It also brings into light the lives of people of different strata during this period.
And the story goes like this…
This epic tale of a love story, which originated from the Tamil mythology is about Kannagi’s love, patience, and her ultimate transition to the status of a Goddess.
Kovalan, who was spellbound by his lust for Madhavi, left Kannagi, his wife. Soon, due to Gadhafi’s scheming ways, lies, and extravagant habits, Kovalan became bankrupt. He returned to Kannagi, who was steadfast in her love for Kovalan.
To regain their wealth and status, per Kananga’s request, Kovalan goes to Madurai, Capital city of King Pandean, to sell Kananga’sanklet that was full of precious gems.
Meanwhile, in Madurai, the goldsmith and the crooked minister who stole the Queen’s anklet, similar to Kannagi’s, blame Kovalan for the theft and behead him without giving an opportunity to prove his innocence. Kannagi, after learning the injustice meted to her husband, storms into the King’s court, proves her husband’s innocence and punishes the city of Madurai by reducing it to ashes by her burning anger.
