Three NRIs, NGO to sponsor teachers for visually impaired school students

PHAGWARA: Coming forward to the help of Government Blind School, Jamalpur, Ludhiana, three NRIs from the US and UK and an NGO have decided to sponsor the monthly salaries of four newly-appointed specially-trained teachers for the visually impaired students.

UK-based NRI Ashok Mehra, state-cum-international coordinator of Punarjot Welfare Society, disclosed that USA-based Balbir Singh Bhanoki, UK-based Rani Sondh and Kirpal Singh Khabra would sponsor three teachers and Punarjot one by footing the bills of their monthly salaries for one year.

He said that this only government matric school in state for the visually impaired students has 66 students. This strength sometimes even reaches 100, but there are only three permanent teachers.

A total of eight teachers are required for this school affiliated to the Punjab School Education Board, Mehra said.

“Punarjot, an NGO wedded to the cause of providing sight to the visually impaired people, motivated three NRIs for contributing Rs 15,000 every month for footing the bills of the salaries of three teachers while the NGO itself will sponsor the fourth teacher’s salary by contributing Rs 5,000 every month,” said Mehra, who is also committed to the cause of visually impaired.

He said that the four new teachers are fully qualified and also have special needs teachers training.

He further disclosed that members of Punarjot have also contributed thousands of rupees for renovating the music room of the school as it was in a dilapidated condition.

Mehra called upon philanthropists and other people to donate a tenth part (tithe or ‘dasvandh’) of their earnings for the welfare of differently- abled people in the same was as they do it for religious places and purposes.
