METUCHEN, NJ: The Board of the prestigious Metuchen Golf and Country club bestowed an honorary membership to Indian Cricket Team Captain, Mahendra Singh Dhoni.
The Metuchen Golf and Country Club is a 101 year old cornerstone institution and this was a first ever honor to be given to an international athlete.
Dhoni first played at the club in 2014 during a vacation here in the United States and has recently been seen playing often with the members. Club member Rajiv Sharma initiated Dhoni to the club and recommended the board to consider the honorary membership.
“It’s really a big deal when an athlete of his stature feels comfortable playing golf at a club. I wanted to be able to show him our acknowledgement of his trust,” said Sharma.
The honor was bestowed after the culmination of the one day Member Guest game on Friday September 16. Club President John Gorman bestowed the honorary membership and welcomed Dhoni to the club.
“Anyone who knows the name Dhoni, knows what an exceptional athlete he is, but we were particularly impressed by his humbleness and ability to quickly assimilate with the membership. We welcome him with open arms to the club.”
Club Pro and PGA professional Andy Brock introduced Dhoni to the larger membership and also announced that Dhoni and Rajiv Sharma finished first in the tournament hitting a 61 on the private course.
Speaking to the membership and a select press gathering, Dhoni stated that he’s looking forward to continuing his golf at the club as a member and participate in the next Member-Guest as a member.
“Today was a great game and I think the trees on the course knew I was going to be a member because twice my OB shots ricochet back to the fairway,” he quipped.
The Metuchen Golf and Country Club is located on Plainfield Road in Edison, NJ.
